About me

"More than anthing else, the colours that you choose for your home set

its mood music.

[…] In very simple terms, though,

colour is emotion.“

"Happy Inside" by Michelle Ogundehin

(including former chief editor of British ELLE Decoration)

My name is Iris Menker and I am a self-employed interior design consultant.

Since 2017 I have been living with my husband and our two daughters in the small town of Weilheim in the idyllic foothills of the Alps, about 50km south of Munich.

With an ILS distance learning course in "Interior Design" and further education in this field, I turned a great passion into a profession.

Through my work as the owner of a small homeware shop and through the sale and advice on the English Annie Sloan chalk paints for furniture, I`ve got further experience regarding the world of interior design.

Life in South of England

Six years of family life in the South of England have had a lasting influence on me in terms of design.

The frequent use of bolder colours and patterns on walls and textiles are clearly visible in English homes and have served as a constant source of inspiration for my design style.

Vintage

Our years in England have also increased my enjoyment and appreciation of vintage, antique and flea markets.

I find the mixture of new and old pieces of furniture particularly appealing. Finding treasures and giving them a new lease on life can give your home more character.

I also like to mix interior styles: e.g.a Louis Poulsen lamp in front of Art Nouveau wallpaper or a floor lamp from the 1950s next to an Art Nouveau bench.

Colour your life

Colours touch our soul like music.

Colours always speak directly to our emotions.

Moreover, they can also be used to visually change room proportions, set accents and create connections between rooms.

I'm always fascinated by how a splash of colour can already make quite a big difference.

What else do I do:

A few years ago, I fulfilled my dream of running a small shop: homeware, decoration, selected stationery, accessories, vintage - sourced in  England, the Netherlands and Germany.

In 2020, I supplemented the range with the popular chalk paints from Annie Sloan (decorative paints for furniture), including their sales, colour consultation services and workshops.

At the beginning of 2022, the shop "KOMMODE" moved into our home.
